Three Thing Thursday

Workout: Today was one of the longest days of my life workout wise, we did 4 different workouts throughout the course of the day. I am planning a big detailed post about it for this weekend so stay tuned. I will say we probably did at least 300 pushups and 300 squats..can you say sore?!

I am currently sitting at a bar by my house with Sean, my roomate Erin and our friend Tom but I didn’t want to miss my 3 Thing Thursday post so I will make it short and sweet.

3 Random Facts I Learned Today:

  1. It takes 21 glasses of water to rehydrate yourself completely from the amount of dehydration from one Coke.
  2. The average amount of time an American spends standing in one day is 41 minutes.
  3. The three most important things to cut out when trying to jump start weight loss (according to the instructor..not my belief!!) is white bread, sugar and dairy.

Interesting right? Hopefully I get to bed soon..big concert tomorrow night!

Mid Week Long Run

I am about to fall asleep on my keyboard..apparently that is what a mid-week 10 miler will do to ya! As I’ve mentioned earlier this week I have big plans this weekend so I needed to get my long run in today.  BUT I am going to an all day boot camp training tomorrow so I couldn’t go too far, I need to be able to workout tomorrow!

So I set out to do 8-9..and ended up doing 10! I blame it on this idea that I got from Page. She wrote about watching “The Spirit of the Marathon” on netflix while doing a long run on the treadmill, so that’s exactly what I did! It was such a great movie.  I was totally ready to be done at 6 miles but then the movie was getting to the good parts so I kept watching.  If you are looking for a good inspirational running movie I highly recommend it.

The other thing I tried to do with this run was working on fueling properly.   I know I did a bad job with it on my last long run so I was determined to try harder.  I went to the store and got these..

Gatorade for during the run, GU for around mile 6, and chocolate milk for after! I drank about 12 oz of water before switching to Gatorade about 5 miles in.  I ended up taking 1/2 of a GU (actually decided to eat my strawberry banana one) at mile 6 and not having the other half.  Weird texture but sat fine in my stomach! I devoured that chocolate milk about 15 minutes post run.

And so far so good! No freezing cold experience like last time, then again I was inside for this run.  I am hoping my legs are fine to do whatever this drill sergeant has in store for us tomorrow. I came home and ate two turkey, cheese and ranch wraps and some sweet potato fries.  Oh and of course a cookie 🙂

Quinoa Disappointment

As I mentioned earlier today I had been hopes for this dinner creation I had thought up.  I had been wanting to try quinoa with cooked apples for a while after I found a recipe using it. Unfortunately I did not follow that recipe at all and ended up pretty disappointed with my dinner.

Step 1: I rinsed 1/2 cup quinoa and added it to 1 cup of water, brought to a boil, then let simmer for 15 minutes

Step 2: Peel and slice 1 apple, 1 sweet potato, and 1 pear

Step 3: Heat 1-2 Tablespoons of olive oil in large pan. Add Sweet Potato cubes then add apple and pear (I added them 5 minutes later, this was not long enough for the sweet potatoes to cook so I recommend waiting for at least 10)

Step 4: Add a few shakes of cinnamon and a touch of vanilla to roasting apples, pear and sweet potatoes.  (I didn’t measure this but I needed to do more, or add this straight to the quinoa)

Step 5: Take roasting fruit/potato and put on top of quinoa.  Add a little maple syrup on top

Now this wasn’t a disastrous meal by any means.  I still ate it.  It just wasn’t nearly as flavorful as I wanted it to be and my sweet potatoes were under cooked so that is never good.

So please..assess..try and make it on your own with your own touches and let me know how to improve it! I feel like I have the basics of  a good recipe this just needs something more.

Any suggestions?

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Workout: After feeling very pathetic with my workout yesterday (30 min elliptical and 15 min weights) I finally ran today.  I did 1 mile warm up at 6.3 then 5 x800s.  The 800’s were all around 7:51-8:00 pace (7.5-7.6) on the treadmill with a 400 jog at 5.8 in between.  This was really hard!! It took a lot of mental will power to finish that last one.  After running outside so much going back to the treadmill is always slightly painful.  Can’t wait to try to do 9 miles on it tomorrow night ::cough being sarcastic cough::

So last night I was all set to go to bed around 9 and I just couldn’t get over wanting some sort of dessert.  We have no good desserts in our house that aren’t chocolate (which I gave up for lent) so I decided to make oatmeal raisin cookies.  Best. Decision. Ever.

I’m not going to pretend like I made this recipe up, I totally stole it from the oatmeal container.  I did cut the portion size down though because it said it made 4 dozen cookies, and there is no way I can eat 4 dozen cookies! Okay maybe if I tried..but I don’t want to find out.

Recipe:

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 3/8 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup regular sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 3/4 cup of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups of oatmeal (I have old fashioned)
  • 1/2 cup of raisins

You just mix the sugar and butter.  Then blend in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Then add oats and raisins and mix everything well.  Bake for 8-10 min at 350.

Mmm delicious! Seriously best oatmeal raisin cookies I’ve ever made (and the first ones but shh..).  I know this recipe was not rocket science by any means but I was glad to just make something so delicious in less than 20 minutes just so I could satisfy my dessert cravings!

The recipe ended up making about 16 cookies, I’ve only eaten 3 so far..

And I have big plans for dinner! I am going to try a quinoa creation I have been brewing up in my head.  I will make sure to post later if it works out well.  I also plan to add some new pages to the blog tonight.. any recommendations?

Just can’t hang..

..like I used too.  I need to remember that my college days are over..I just can’t hang like I used to.  After going out to my first “club” Saturday night I was so hungover all day on Sunday I could barely move.  It was miserable.  I need to remember I can’t drink like I did in college.  PS did you know that “clubs” aren’t really that different from a regular bar? At least the one we went to.  It was more of a lounge atmosphere.

Despite the ridiculous hangover it was a really fun night! I am a little worried about my training schedule this week though after how bad I felt after drinking on Saturday night.  This Friday is the Lil Wayne concert and then Saturday we are going to a roof top cubs game.  Both events should involve a decent amount of drinking so I am not planning on getting any good training runs in on Saturday or Sunday.

So tentitive plan for the week? I did cross training today, 5 x 800s tomorrow, longish run Wed (hopefully 8-9) and then 6 miles on Friday.  I am also attending a boot camp certification class on Thursday so that should be really interesting! Hopefully my legs aren’t too sore and I can still run on Friday.

Sorry for the lameo post, I promise I will be back tomorrow with some actually interesting content 🙂

-I swear I don’t really drink that much but I am only 22, that’s what my friends do on the weekends!

Love/Hate Relationships

Its a beautiful day to have a day! Loving my Saturday so far.

Workouts: Since today was the last day of my training week let’s do a small recap

  • Sunday: 5 miles easy (48:00)
  • Monday: Stair master, precor, and weights
  • Tuesday: 8x 400s- total miles =5.5
  • Wednesday: Rest
  • Thursday: 11 miles
  • Friday: 30 min bike, 15 min abs, 10 min stretching
  • Saturday: 4 miles tempo: 33:41

So overall 25.5 miles.  I am pretty happy with this, I followed my training schedule exactly besides today.  I was supposed to do a 45 min tempo but I cut it short due to my legs being dead!

As I was running today I was thinking about things I really love..but I also really hate.. so I thought I would share some with you!

I LOVE being able to run 11 miles, I feel so accomplished! But I HATE how tired I am for the next 2 days afterwards.  Despite my tired legs I was still able to pull out a pretty decent 4 miles today.

I LOVE having a nice clean house, it makes me so happy.  I HATE having to clean it!

I also LOVE making delicious breakfasts on the weekends like this banana french toast.  I HATE having to leave my bed in order to have it.  Can’t I just have a personal chef?

I was in LOVE with the fro-yo I got on Thursday night. It had delicious peanut butter flavor in it.  I HATE that I doubted the deliciousness of the peanut butter and only got a little bit.

Three Thing Thursday

Happy Jersey Shore Finale! Today’s Three Thing Thursday is quite random..

  1. I set a new personal distance record today..11 miles! I decided to switch my long run to today so I didn’t have to worry about getting up early on Saturday or watching what I eat/drink Friday night.  11 miles is freaking LONG..it felt so much longer then 10.  Splits ranged from 8:14-9:22 and average was 8:57.

2. Speaking of running..I keep getting terribly cold and start shivering uncontrollable after these long runs.  Its worse when it’s really cold out but today it was 35 and Sunny, not warm by any means, but I’ve run in worse, and I still was so cold.  It lasts forever after I get done running, normally gets better after I take a shower, change my clothes, and wrap myself in a blanket.  I did a lot of google-ing and saw answers from dehydration to electrolyte imbalances.  Does this happen to anyone else? How do I make it stop?? My dad said I was perfectly fine and it was nothing to worry about but I took my temp after like an hour and it was 95.2, I feel like that is way too low.

3.  And in the spirit of making 3 thing Thursday completely random, lets talk about Chicken!

I am quite terrible at cooking chicken normally but the other day I decide to try cooking it in a crock pot.  It was so yummy! I put three chicken breasts in the crock pot with a can of chicken broth and let it sit for 4.5 hours.  It was perfectly tender and shredded apart so deliciously.  I made a BBQ ranch chicken pizza thingy on Tuesday night and then tonight Sean cooked up some pasta (I was too busy trying to avoid death by shivers).

And now I am hoping I can stay warm long enough to go get some fro-yo.  I promised myself my whole run I would go get some if I finished it (not that I need to run to get fro-yo, I am just trying not to spend money on buying food right now since my credit card bill is purely from Subway, Argo Tea, and Starbucks right now).

Have you ever run 11 miles? Did you fuel during it?

-This was the first time I tried to eat or drink anything.  I stashed a water bottle on my route and probably drank 1/2 of it and then I ate 2 power bites.  Not exactly proper fueling but better than nothing!

Do you get cold after you run? Do you know why this happens?

Do you think food on blue plates is unappetizing looking?

-Apparently that’s true..or maybe my pizza just doesn’t look pretty but I sweat its yummy!
