Thankful Thursday

This week has been a crazy, exciting and busy week. A lot of big things have happened in my life and I have a lot of things to be thankful for so today  I bring you Thankful Thursday!

  1. I am thankful for my new apartment! I have signed a lease on a new place with my sister and her friend starting August 1st! the decision to move, find a place, and sign on it all happened within the past 10 days or so. I am going to miss my roommates now and my current apartment but finding a new apartment was essential due to…
  2. MY PUPPY. I have mentioned on and off on this blog that I want a dog and as of yesterday I have a deposit on a 4 day old golden-doodle pup! I will share so many pictures you will hate me soon enough. I made the decision to buy a pup instead of adopt because my roommate is allergic and can only be around hypoallergenic dogs. If you have any other questions about how I chose my pup please ask 🙂
  3. I am very thankful for ice cream. It has been really warm here lately and all I want is ice cream at all times. I’ve had cookies n creme, snickers ice cream bars, and hagaan daz ice cream cones. All within the past  4 days thankyaverymuch. Don’t judge me, or do. Either way I’m probably going to eat more ice cream tonight.
  4. I am also thankful for smoothies. I have been loving on smoothies lately and this one was especially delicious. Frozen mango, pineapple and strawberry pieces mixed with milk and strawberry yogurt. Heaven in a glass.
  5. I am also thankful for books! I love reading books especially fiction, trashy romance novels. I have been trying to read more books lately and just finished this one. A great read if anyone is looking for an only semi-trashy romance novel.
  6. Finally I am thankful for 3 day weekends. I fly to Nashville Saturday morning to hang out with my boyfriend and his two sisters and their two friends. Its going to be an awesome 3 day weekend. I am NOT thankful for the fact that they all get to go on Friday and I have to go by myself on Saturday due to my lack of vacation days but cest le vie.

Workout Wednesday

For this week’s Workout Wednesday I bring you variety: If you read my blog regularly you will know that my most common form of exercise these days is running. I haven’t always been so big on running though and for a few years in college I barely ever ran. So if you are looking to switch up your cardio workout routine why not try one of these ways to get your cardio in, especially now thats its summer!


Rollerblading: I’ll admit until last night I haven’t gone rollerblading since I was a kid. Yesterday I decided to change that and set out on a 20 min stroll on my roommates new rollerblades. It was pretty difficult at first but once I got the hang of it I was having fun. Rollerblading gets your heart rate up and is an excellent quad and core workout. Biking: This summer I purchased an awesome new bike and have been using it a ton! Biking is a great form of cross training for running as well. I found that while it may take a little bit more effort to get my heart rate up on the bike, if I ride it for a little longer then while running my calorie burn is about the same. It also gives my always sore shins a nice break.

While rollerblading and biking are my two favorite forms of summer exercise besides running there are a lot more! You can always swim laps (in a pool or lake), play volleyball, kickball, softball or any other sport, or simply go on a long walk.

Week 5 Recap

This half-marathon is creeping up faster and faster. Oh and apparently June is almost over? So glad the weather in Chicago JUST decided to be nice.

This past week I really wanted to run 20 miles. I didn’t quite hit that but I did run 4 out of 6 days so that was a great success, I like you (thats my Borat impression).

  • Monday: 4.1 miles 35:57
  • Tuesday: 50 min bike ride
  • Wednesday: 3 naked miles
  • Thursday: 5 miles of fartlek 44:57
  • Friday: Easy bike and arm weights
  • Saturday: Proud to Run 10k 55:41
  • Sunday: 30 min walk/rest (just counting the walk for the 100 day challenge) 

Weekly total: 18.3 miles

Not exactly the 20 I was hoping for but close enough!


My plan for this week is a little messed up because I am flying to Nashville early Saturday morning for the holiday weekend. As of right now the goal is

  • Monday: 5 mile run (Check! It was slow but I did it)
  • Tuesday: Insanity or bike ride
  • Wednesday: 5-6 miles with some sort of speed work
  • Thursday: Elliptical or bike ride
  • Friday: 9-10 miles long
  • Saturday-Sunday: do my 30 minutes for the 100 day challenge in some legit way thats not just lifting a drink from the table to my mouth 🙂

Taste of Chicago

I feel like all I did this weekend was eat and drink! Oh and run a 10k. 

The weekend started with a date night visit to “The Counter.” This build-your-own-burger place I first visited about a month ago with my aunt and sister. You get to pick if you want a ground beef burger/chicken/turkey burger/veggie burger and then pick all your toppings, sauces and what type of bun you want it on OR you can get it as a salad.

My first visit I wasn’t too impressed because I went the salad route, and I don’t really like salads. This time I went with the 1/3 lb burger and it was delicious.

Sean had a burger with grilled onions, lettuce, feta, tomato and pickles.

After the race on Saturday, Sean and I rode our bike over to the Taste of Chicago.

The Taste is one of my favorite Chicago events. There are a ton of different vendors that sell a sample of their food. You purchase tickets and then use these at the different vendors. All the vendors have “taste portions” which are only 2-4 tickets so it’s really easy to sample a bunch of different food. Sean and I took fall advantage of the taste portions and got a bunch of fun food.

I was trying so hard to capture all of our food on camera, but I got a little ambitious with the frozen banana hence the bite marks. I also forgot to take a picture of my rainbow cup ice cream. It was all so yummy and I am glad we went!

I am also glad we got to harass my friend Steven who was working at the Taste. HI STEVEN!

We ended the weekend with a bucket of beers (or two..) on Saturday night than brunch and some day drinking to celebrate the Pride parade on Sunday.

Proud to Run 10K Race Recap

Yesterday I ran my first 10K since grade school! The Proud to Run 10k was held on the lakeshore path on Saturday morning. It started at 8:04 (I am guessing that has something to do with gay rights..anyone know?!) so it wasn’t too early of a wake up call for me.

I got up and did the easy 20 min bike ride over to the race and got there with plenty of time to spare. As I stretched and jogged to warm up my legs felt really heavy and tired, not a good way to start a race. Lucky as soon as I started running my legs felt great.

I really tried to run a smart race and not start out to fast. Unfortunately when my watched beeped 8:14 for the first mile I knew that was way to fast for me to maintain. I tried my best to keep up my pace for as long as I could which worked well until mile 3. After that it got a lot harder and I slowed down and took a few 30-45s walking breaks the second half of the race.

I ended up finishing in a great sprint with a time of 55:41 (8:58 pace). My garmin was a mess the whole time or I just did a really bad job of running the tangents because my watch splits were 6.31 miles in 55:49. Mile breakdowns below:

  • Mile 1: 8:14
  • Mile 2: 8:30
  • Mile 3: 8:56
  • Mile 4: 8:54
  • Mile 5: 9:12
  • Mile 6: 9:30
  • Last .3 were an 8:21 pace
I was really happy to be done at the end, it was HOT. Over all the race was really well wasn’t a huge race by any means (for Chicago) only 600 or so participants but it was really fun. Lots of people dressed up and where wearing gay pride clothes.
After the race I chugged some water, ate an orange slice and then tried to retrieve my bike from the very overly packed bike rack. It was a mess!
I don’t think I will have any race photos besides this one I snapped of myself at the end. Clearly I was trying to look my prettiest.

Overall Stats were 8/26 in my age group, 65/275 women, and 286th overall.

Happy to have finished a 10k! Anyone else race this weekend?

Speed Shoes

Things are really starting to turn around in this running world of mine. Yesterday I set out on an easy run, or a hard one, depending on how my legs felt.

After my naked 3 miles on Wednesday night I was ready to strap on the Garmin again and see what my pace really was. My legs felt pretty tight when I first started but when I saw my first mile was an 8:40 something I thought “hmm I should probably try to make this a faster run.”

I decided once I got to the Lakefront path to do a fartlek of sorts. I ran 1 min hard, 1 min easy, 2 min hard, 2 min easy, 3 min hard, 3 min easy and then back down with another 3, 2, 1 hard followed by easy minutes. I don’t know my exact splits but Mile 2 was around 8:30, Mile 3 around 8:50 and Mile 4 around 9:00. I was so tired and ready to be done by the end of this so I took the last easy mile home quite easy in a 9:52.

Total: 5 miles 44:57

I am really happy with this run for another reason..I DIDN”T STOP! Ever since I started running after my half marathon I feel like I have taken at least one walking break in every run. Normally I still leave my watch running so at least I know that was contributing to my slower (for me) pace but yesterday I was determined to not stop running at all. I only got stopped at one light which is a miracle as well and it was during my cool down.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love my walking breaks. If I didn’t care about trying to run hard then I would be a perfectly happy run/walker my whole life. I am however signed up for a 10k on Saturday *yikes that’s TOMORROW* so I needed a confidence boosting run. I feel much better about being able to run the whole 6.2 tomorrow without stopping.


I know I’ve mentioned it before but I got new shoes last week. I am currently on my third pair of Asics GT-2150’s. They were hard to find because the 2160’s are out now but I did manage to find them for pretty cheap so I was excited. Hopefully I can keep them front getting trashed like my last ones.
