Naked Running

22 Jun

He he I wonder how many perv’s that title will bring..

Today I did something I haven’t done since..December. I went running outside WITHOUT my garmin. I know shocking right? I have gotten so used to knowing exactly how far I was had run and what my pace was that it is weird to sit here right now and not know those details. Weird, yet refreshing.

The idea to go “naked” running came after a day of obstacles. First I forgot my workout clothes so I couldn’t work out at my gym like I had originally planned. I then thought it was going to rain so I scratched the idea of running altogether and left my new running shoes at work since I wouldn’t be needing them. Then I came home to find out that it was not in fact going to rain and at 8:30 at night it was perfectly acceptable to go for a run.

So run I did. I think I did 3 miles in less than 30 minutes, I couldn’t tell you my exact splits or distance, but that’s okay.

Maybe I will try this naked running thing more often.

Running Around Naked

Workout Wednesday

22 Jun

I know it has been a few weeks since I did a Workout Wednesday post but I am in back this week!

Last time we focused on shoulder exercises, so why not focus on biceps and triceps this week?

Your biceps and triceps are two of your smaller muscle groups. This means that if you spend all of your time lifting to strengthen just these two muscles you probably won’t burn two many calories. You definately still want to work them though. This is best done with combination exercises, or in a circuit fashion.

For example you could always do lunges with a bicep curl.

Favorite Bicep Exercises:

Tricep Exercises:
Adding 12-15 reps and 3 sets of bicep and tricep exercises into your weight training routine is sure to give you toned arms and eliminate chicken wings!
What is your workout this Wednesday?

Summer Salads

21 Jun

Workouts: Yesterday I had the first run under 9 min pace in over a month I think. It was great! Of course my Garmin messed up so I had to do some calculating but I figured out it was 4.1 miles in 35:57. I didn’t go into this run with a plan, I just wanted to get 4 miles in. Because my Garmin was messed up I didn’t really know my pace for the first mile so then when it finally decided to start working I saw I was cruising at 8:40 so I just tried to keep it. As Borat would say “Great Success”

Today was hot and humid but I was really feeling a nice long bike ride. It was SO windy down by the lake so it was actually way harder than expected for half of it. My heart rate got up in the 180’s when I was going into the wind but I couldn’t get it above 150 on the way back. Oh well. Total 51 minutes of biking.

I planned on coming home and doing some strength training but instead I found our dishwasher had flooded! It was my fault, I used normal dish soap (like the kind you clean pots with) instead of dishwasher detergent. OOPS.

Despite practically flooding our kitchen, I have done some productive things in it as well. Like make salads!

Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t really like salads. I think it’s because I don’t like most salad dressings, except ranch and poppy seed. I do crave cold salads in the summer though so I have made two different salads the past two nights for dinner.

Poppy-seed Fruit Salad

  • Spinach
  • Craisins
  • Grapes
  • Cut up Chicken Breast
  • Strawberries
  • Feta
  • poppy-seed dressing
YUM. This is really the only salad I’ve made that I always love it no matter what.
I also made this quinoa fruit salad that I found from Angela’s blog. My pictures are not nearly as pretty as hers and I changed the recipe up a little bit to my liking.
Quinoa Fruit Salad
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • 1/2 cup quinoa
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp balsamic
  • fresh lime juice
I prepared all of the quinoa then put the syrup, balsamic and lime juice on top. I then mixed it with the cut up fruit and devoured! This made two really big portions, I guess I know what my lunch will be tomorrow.
And now time to do work! I am moving out of my apartment in the next month and hopefully adopting a PUPPY! This means a lot of computer researching is in my future.
What is your favorite summertime salad?
Day 18: 35 min run
Day 19: 51 min bike ride

Week 4: Training Recap

20 Jun

Training for the Rock and Roll Half has been way more relaxed then training for my last half marathon. This past week I realized that I am goingt o be super flexible with this training schedule and if I only run 3 days a week that is perfectly fine. Doing the 100 day challenge has helped me to keep doing some sort of exercise each day so I am getting in more cross training this time around. I may try and run 4 days this week but I kinda like the 3 day schedule I am on right now.

Week 4 Recap:

  • Monday: 45 min weights
  • Tuesday: 4.6 miles of speed work (4 x 800s)
  • Wednesday: easy walk
  • Thursday: 4.4 miles easy on treadmill
  • Friday: 7 miles
  • Saturday: 30 min weights
  • Sunday: 30 min bike ride
Week Total: 17 miles
I am up from 14 miles last week. Ideally I would like to get to running 20 miles a week comfortably with no injuries or pain. So far my hip has been fine, my shins have been hurting though. I did get new shoes on Thursday so hopefully that will eliminate any future shin pain. I was being lazy about icing them as well but I iced them after my 7 mile run and they were fine the next day.
New shins and icing for the win!
I am doing a 10k on Saturday for the first time since grade school so hopefully that goals. Goal as of now is to finish under an hour. Hopefully that should be very doable but I have been running s-l-o-w (for me) lately so no promises.

Wordless Wedding Weekend

20 Jun

A beautiful wedding weekend. Congratulations to my cousin Molly and new cousin in law Nick!

Horseshoes and Long Runs

17 Jun

Hello from Springfield! Sean and I arrived last night around 8 and had horseshoes for dinner. Horseshoes actually originated in Springfield and apparently a lot of people have never heard of them. They are a thick piece of texas toast topped with some type of meat (usually a hamburger) then smothered with fries and cheese sauce. So not healthy but soooo delicious.

This morning I woke up with the intention of doing my long run. I didn’t get started until after 9 and it was HOT out. I started off with a 2 mile loop around my house and felt like I was going to die the whole time. I stopped at my house after that, got some water, stretched, and mentally talked myself into continuing to run.

It wasn’t really fun but I finished it. I took a few timed and untimed walking breaks. Overall it looked like this..

  • Mile 1 : 9:06
  • Mile 2: 9:21
  • Mile 3: 9:32
  • Mile 4: 9:08
  • Mile 5: 10:00 —> 1 min walking break
  • Mile 6: 9:53 —-> 1 min walking break
  • Mile 7: 9:42
Total: 7 miles in 1:06.44
Not my fastest but I’m glad I did it. Training for this half marathon has been a lot harder then training for the Champaign one. I am just much slower now and I don’t really know why. Oh well cest le vie.
In other exciting news my sister officially accepted a teaching job in Chicago!
She will be moving up at the end of July, and I possibly may be moving in with her. No decicisions have been made yet but if I do move in with her I am getting a PUPPY!
Time to head off to St. Louis for the Wedding!
How do you get through tough workouts?

A Series of Un-exepected Events

16 Jun

Sorry readers, I don’t mean to be a terribly inconsistent blogger. I have been meaning to post since Tuesday but I have had a very strange Series of Un-expected Events. No not unfortunate events, just un-expected.

For instance on Tuesday my boyfriend invited me out to the suburbs to watch him play softball. This meant that I ended up staying after work to run (4.6 miles of speed work) then went out to his house and slept over there. Meaning I never went home from 5 am on Tuesday til 8:30 Wed night.

I also did not expect to get downtown an hour and half before I had to work on Wed. I did manage to spend the time drinking a delicious Starbucks and enjoying a cranberry orange bagel. I thought I would share it with this unexpected bird that decided to hang out inside the lobby with me he wasn’t having it.

I also did not remember it was my roommates birthday on Friday so I had to go on a search for the perfect present on Wed night which led to me getting home super late. It was so worth it though because I found her a great pair of workout shoes to help with her 100 day challenge.

I was planning on doing my long run this morning. Unexpectedly it was pouring rain when I tried too. I ended up doing 4.4 on the treadmill instead. Sorry 7 miler I will have to be doing you this weekend.

Sometimes unexpected events just happen. And sometimes A LOT of them happen in a row. Sorry blog friends, I hope you will keep reading even with my inconsistent ways.

Today is my Friday! I am going to Springfield after work tonight and then its on to St. Louis for my cousins wedding. Its going to be an amazing weekend so hopefully I will be able to pop in with updates!

What un-expected events happened to you this week?

Day 13: 4.6 mile run

Day 14: 45 min walk

Day 15: 4.4 mile run
