The Cheap Girl Workout

I am super excited for this weekend because I am going home for my Dad’s 50th birthday!

My dad is pretty much the coolest guy in the world so I am super excited to go home and hang out with him and the rest of my fam!


Yesterday as I was deciding what I wanted to do to for a workout I remembered an old favorite of mine from college. I always used to do random Exercise TV workout’s in college because 1. They were FREE and 2. They were challenging!

I am dubbing On Demand Exercise TV as “The Cheap Girl Workout” because it allows you to try all sorts of different workouts without having to pay for exercise dvds or to take group fitness classes at a gym. These workouts have a lot of pro’s and a few cons.


  • They are FREE if you have On Demand Cable
  • They range from 10 min-60 min videos so you can choose how long you want to workout for
  • There is a huge variety (yoga, pilates, cardio, weights, belly dancing, walking and more!)
  • They let Jillian Michael’s kick your butt without having to buy her videos
  • If you don’t like one video you can always turn it off and try a new one
  • They usually need very little equipment
  • This is a con of most workout videos/some group classes: You don’t have the individual attention of a trainer to watch and see if you are doing the moves correctly
  • Some videos are better than others so it is a trial and error until you find ones you like
  • Some videos are only half as long as the real video if you were to purchase it
  • The videos are constantly changing so the one you really enjoyed last week may no longer be there this week
Overall I think the Pro’s of using Exercise TV videos outweight the Con’s. Just be careful if you are new to exercising before you jump into some of the more complicated weight lifting ones!
My personal favorites are any of the Jillian Michael’s videos (30 Day Shred, Boost Your Metabolism, No More Trouble Zones) and the 10 min arms, abs and legs videos!

    I don’t have on demand TV, but I do use workouts when I can’t get to the gym and it’s not a running day. The workouts have the same cons as you’ve mentioned with exercise DVDS, and some of them require equipment, but for the most part the daily workouts provide a really high intensity routine. I’d say that overall, they’re easier than crossfit, and the same as/harder than Jillian’s DVDs.

    My husband is too much of a cheap-o right now (I say this with love, of course) to pay for cable, so if I want to workout from home I am relying on old SHAPE magazine workout dvds, haha. They’re not great, but better than nothing I suppose!
