Lazy Blueberry Muffins

Happy Lazy Sunday! This weekend has been such a relaxing, lazy weekend. After my run yesterday I did a lot of laying on the couch with Sean..we ended up staying in but did venture out to best buy so I could buy this..

New Camera

I love it so far!! I wanted in in pink but was channeling my inner Veruca Salt and needed it NOW so I settled for the blue because that’s what they had in the store.

Today we got up and had breakfast at eggsperience.. it was delicious! If you live in/around Chicago I HIGHLY recommend it.  I forgot the battery for my new camera though so I couldn’t take any pictures of the deliciousness 😦

I was in a baking mood today so I found this easy healthy blueberry muffins recipe..

  • 3/4 cups milk (I used skim)
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 cup blueberries (I used almost 2)

You mix the wet ingredients (egg, milk, applesauce) and the dry (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt) seperately then pour the wet into the middle of the dry and fold in the blueberries.  Bake at 400 for 15-20 minutes. It made 12 decent size muffins.  I probably used way too many blueberries because the muffins were oozing out blueberries but because they aren’t that sweet I think it helped! Very quick and easy! Now that I have a good camera hopefully I can start doing more fun food recipes!

But What Was I Thinking?

Last week I described my long run through pictures and numbers so this week I thought I would describe it with my random thoughts during the run.  First of all I got these beautiful babies in the mail yesterday

They are the same model as the one’s I have been running in (Asics 2150) but I decided my shoes were getting worn down and possibly the reason for my shin pain so I ordered these from runners warehouse for $54.00!! I was pumped about the price..and they match my bed spread!

And now for my random thoughts..I used the mapmyrun app on my phone because I am still garmin-less so that’s what the random mile markers and times are from..I only looked at it every once in awhile

  • First 2 miles..”hmm I am enjoying letting this random guy pace me and running exactly two steps behind him..hope he doesn’t mind”
  • 2.9 mile: First look at the watch and it said 25:00..oops going a little fast
  • 34 min mark..”running in the snow is really hard..I don’t wanna do this anymore”
  • 40 min: 4.5 mile mark..stopped and stretched and felt renewed “half way..I got this”
  • 50 min mark “So much snow..in my nose..not cool”
  • 1 hour “hmm I am REALLY thirsty..I should start learning to bring water with me”
  • 1:05: “I am really glad I picked a route where I would get to stop at stop lights on the way back”
  • 1:07: “What the what why are all these stop lights GREEN!”
  • 1:12: “8 miles..oops where did my Nike + go? Good thing I turned it off halfway through because I didn’t want to know what mile I was at..and now its gone missing”
  • 1:18: “Really I have to run past my house to finish this? 3 more minutes 3 more minutes”
  • 1:21:00: 9 miles in exactly 1:21..I guess I’ve got this nine minute pace down!

And that is what I was thinking! Overall a much harder feeling run then last week’s because the snow was really hard to run in.  My shins felt fine though so hopefully these new shoes are the magical trick I needed.  RIP Nike +.. you were fun for the 3 days I used you.  Good think my garmin is  getting returned to me tonight 🙂

Three Thing Thursday

Happy Thursday 🙂 I love Thursdays! Its almost the weekends..Friday’s at work always go by fast..its just a great day!

Workout: Just decided to do a 10 K..6.2 miles according to the nike +.  I still don’t know how much I trust this thing but I used the map my run app on my phone too and that said I ran 6.29 miles so close enough.  It was a rough one though, first 5k in 25:30 then 8k in 43 and then 10 k in 54:340.  It was sooo windy down by the lake, really windy city? I’m over you!

And now time for..3 Thing Thursday! Today I will share 3 random facts about me from my past!

  1. I love to read! When I was little I used to lay in my bed and read books for hours.  I also happen to be a very fast reader, I finished the last Harry Potter book in a day as well as the last book in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series in a day.  When I get into a book I can’t put it down.  But the problem is I never have new books to read so I rarely do unless I am on vacation, or my roomates bring home books.  When I went to Florida in December I read a new book every day.
  2. I used to think I was going to be really into theater.  I tried out for a lot of local community plays and musicals when I was in grade school, and never made ANY! I must have been terrible.  I also tried to be a dancer and try out for poms in high school..no worries I was one of the only two people who got cut.  Thank god I gave up those ambitions..I just wasn’t cut out to be a performer I guess.
  3. I only went on two spring break trips my whole life and they were both to South Padre Island, Texas.  And both were..Awesome. The first year my friend Maggie and I drove down there with 6 of our guy friends and then the next year there was a huge group of 12 of us that all went.   It’s totally a Spring Break place and not that nice but I loved everything about it.

That’s all I have for tonight..I am going to try and convince SOMEONE to go get fro-yo with me..I still haven’t gotten any since I wanted some LAST Thursday..sad life 😦

Workout: 3 miles “easy” in 26:55 on the treadmill + 15 min of the elliptical.  Followed by ice! I am not following my training plan at all this week but I am going at attempt to get 20 miles again so as long as that happens I don’t care how.

And since everyone else in the blog world is doing an ABC’s post theses days..

Hot Chocolate 5K

I am a very happy girl today… MY GARMIN WAS FOUND!! I was seriously having a panic attack about losing this and trying to figure out how long I would have to wait before I bought a new one..I have become addicted to this thing quite fast! Thanks dad, your the best 🙂

Workouts: Rest day? Oops..I was reallly sore from my weight workout yesterday (oh hai one legged squats and deadlifts) and my shins were hurting so I decided not to do my running workout until tomorrow.  I probably should have done some ellipticalling but cest le vie.

Since I have decided to make this blog more of a running/exercise blog I think it is only proper that I give a race report of my first official road race since high school, The Hot Chocolate 5K.

I decided I wanted to train for a race when I went home one weekend in September and went to my mom’s team’s cross country meet (She coaches my old high school’s CC and Track teams).  So we developed a 6 week plan to get a speedy 5k time.  My goal was under 22 minutes.

I followed the training plan almost exactly but also developed some pretty bad shin splints.  I think it was a combo of running on a treadmill without an incline, bad shoes, and too much running too fast.  By the time race day came I was ready to get it over with.

Race day ended up being FREEZING. It started at 7:30 am and it was under 20 degrees, in November.  Meaning it hadn’t really gotten cold yet so I wasn’t used to running in the cold.  My legs pretty much felt numb from the beginning.  I didn’t run the race I wanted too, I think I psyched myself out about it because I never saw the first mile marker so I kept thinking I was running too slow but then saw the 2 mile at 15:30, I was on pace for my goal.  I ended up finishing in 24:55, not my goal but I did it!

The BEST part about this race though came later that day.  I kept checking the race results to see what my actual time was, and then much to my surprise when they were finally posted I saw my name listed as one of the top three females!! But with a 24:55 and over 12,000 runners, there is no way that was true.  The race must have gotten my chip mixed up with someone much quicker!  It was my bib number, my name, my age, just NOT my time.  I emailed the race directors and they said they would check into it but nothing was ever changed.  And then about a month later I received a huge plaque in the mail for being the 3rd place women with my picture on it and everything! It was quite funny but I do feel bad for whoever actually got that time and place.  I did report the error so there wasn’t much else I could do.  The plaque now hangs in our kitchen as a joke, but whenever someone new comes over they are immediately impressed with my skillzzz.

Mood Busters

Today was just another Monday and I could not for the life of me be in a good mood.  I got plenty of sleep but still was so tired and cranky all day.  I think it was a combination of having a fun weekend at home with my family then having to leave, coming home to so much unpacking and cleaning, having to get up and go to the slowest work day ever AND my garmin has gone missing.. I can’t find it anywhere which mean’s it has to be at my house in Springfield but no one there can find it either 😦

Instead of whining I’ve come up with a list of mood busters..but first training update!

Workouts: After a great 8 miler with my sister I ended official week 2 of Half Marathon training with 20 miles.  Not bad for only running 3 days.  I also did 2 days of cross training with elliptical and weights, as well as a long walk on Sunday.

Today I was supposed to run 3.5 easy with weights so I did one mile, 10 min upper body weights, 1 mile, 10 min of core, and then my shins were feeling really tight so I did a mile on the elliptical and 10 min of leg work.

Smash’s sure-fired way to improve your mood:

  1. Take a walk.  Sometimes just getting some fresh air, or leaving the place you at helps a lot to relieve some tension and relax.
  2. Hang out with someone who makes you happy.  If you have a friend or family member who normally makes you happier and you can talk to then go see them ASAP.
  3. WORKOUT.  This one is huge for me, sometimes when I am really angry or sad or lethargic all I need to do is get a good workout in and my mood improves drastically (*also works with hangovers*).
  4. Get busy. Sometimes when you are in a bad mood and you have nothing to do it gets worse because you just think about it and sulk. Trying to distract yourself with something else will help you forget what you were sulking over in the first place.
  5. Cook: This may not work for everyone but I always enjoy baking something or making a big meal when I am feeling cranky.  Not so much for the eating aspect of it but I find baking relaxing.
  6. Watch your favorite movie or listen to your favorite songs.
  7. If all else fails..find some candy 🙂 That sugar rush can’t hurt.

So today I

  1. &2. Walked over to Sean’s building and had lunch with him, got some fresh air and hung out with someone who makes me happy.  Plus he gave me carmel corn and cookies so that helps with number 7 as well
  2. See above..lunch dates with boyfriend = happiness
  3. Did a great running/weight workout and felt 1 million times better after..then remembered my garmin was still missing
  4. I tried my best to be productive at work
  5. I made my favorite salad when I got home.. chopped lettuce, strawberries, apples, feta and poppyseed dressing
  6. I listened to my ipod the whole train ride home. I normally forget to do this because I am too busy catching up on blogs and now I am going to watch Across the Universe as I fall asleep.  It is my go to bad mood movie.. Junior year of college I had a rough first semester and I literally fell asleep to this movie every night for a month
  7. I found the Valentines day treat bag my mom gave me and ate mass amounts of swedish fish and a fun size snickers and twix.

Now if only someone finds my watch I will be such a happy Smash.

And that was the first successful 8 miler with my sister! She is running the Champaign 1/2 marathon with me so its great that we got to train together!  Now off to enjoy the rest of girls weekend in Springfield.
